Message from the Principal
Dear Families,
I hope this newsletter finds you well. As we dive into the second week of Term 2, I want to take a moment to reflect on some recent events and share important updates with you all.
Last Thursday, we celebrated Easter with our Easter Bonnet Parade. A big thank you to our students for parading their amazing Easter bonnets, and to families for donating Easter goods for our Easter Raffle and purchasing raffle tickets to support our school fundraising efforts. The school raised $1030, which will go towards purchasing new take-home readers. Congratulations to the students and families who won a hamper in our raffle!
This Thursday, we held our ANZAC Day Assembly to honour the brave people who have served our country. Thank you to Mr. Molnar for organising the assembly, and well done to our students for ensuring it was a respectful occasion. I also want to congratulate Tyler and Zali, our school leaders, for representing us so admirably at the ANZAC Day service at the Golf Club.
A reminder that this Friday, 2nd May, is a school curriculum day. Staff from all schools across the Archipelago will be gathering at Alyangula Area School to engage in a full day of professional learning delivered by Berry Street practitioners. Seagrass will be operating Vacation Care for students requiring supervision on the day — for more information, please contact Seagrass directly.
On Thursday, 8th May, we are excited to host the Alyangula Area School Athletics Carnival. Students will participate in field events throughout the morning. Preschool students from both groups will also attend preschool on this day and will join the Transition and Year 1 students for some special athletics events.
Students from Years 2–12 will compete in field events at the school oval according to their age groups from 8:15 am – 12:30 pm. At 4pm, all students are required to reconvene at the Town Oval for the track events. Families and friends are warmly invited to attend and support their children at both sessions. A BBQ will be available at the Town Oval, with funds raised going towards new sporting equipment. We would love to have volunteers to help run events or assist with the BBQ — if you are available to help, please contact the school office.
You may have noticed that we have had to cancel the Alyangula Area School Mother's Day Markets. Unfortunately, this year we did not receive any nominations from parents or community members to support, join, or lead the school’s fundraising committee. A big thank you to the CWA for stepping in to run the markets for the community!
This week, students in Transition to Year 6 will be bringing home swimming permission forms. Our swimming program will run during Weeks 5 and 6, allowing each class to participate in 8 x 45-minute swimming sessions over the fortnight. Lessons will be delivered by Splash Swim Academy, with the costs covered by the NT Government. Please take the time to read the swimming information and return the permission form promptly to ensure your child can participate in the swimming and water safety program.
Finally, a reminder that Monday, 5th May, is the May Day public holiday, and as such, there will be no school.
Have a great weekend, everyone!
Mel Dougherty
2025 Fundraising
Alyangula Area School Council are looking for a parent representative to lead a fundraising subcommittee.
The idea is to have a school presence at markets and other community events throughout the year. In addition to raising funds for the school it also provides a great opportunity to be involved in both the school and local community.
Please contact the school on 08 8987 6366 or email alyangula.admin@education.nt.gov.au regarding further information.
