Newsletter 14 - Term 3 - Week 6 - 2022
From the Principal
We are at the end of Week 6 and we could not be more proud of our community and the way in which everyone is participating and supporting each other both in and outside of the classroom. We have been busy celebrating Science Week during week 5, with a very engaging and successful Science Gala on the Friday, which saw our students have the opportunity to be involved in a day of science experiments and cool competitions! We had some ancient looking staff and students on Friday as well, as our transition students celebrated 100 days of school!
The celebrations continued as we explored the theme ‘Dreaming with our eyes open’ for Book Week in week 6. We were able to spend one glorious week celebrating books and Australian children's authors and illustrators. Staff and students created colourful displays, developed activities, ran competitions and told stories relating to the theme to highlight the importance of reading. As a school, we had a record number of sales through our Book Fair, and topped the week off with the most creative costumes I have ever seen as our staff and students came dressed as their favourite book character for a Book Week Parade. I would like to thank our whole school community for your contribution to ensuring Science Week, 100 days of school, and Book Week was a magical experience for our Alyangula students.
I would like to take this opportunity to introduce Ms Jess Taylor to our staffing profile. Jess is our new Assistant Principal, and has arrived on Eylandt over the weekend, ready and raring go! We have also farewelled Mr Gary and Ms Sharna and thank them for their support and dedication to our students and our school.
The school value that is our focus for weeks 6 and 7 is Courage. Students are explicitly exploring what the value of courage looks like, feels like, and sounds like across the different contexts of the school. Please take the time to continue to discuss our school values with your students at home.
This Thursday is our Father’s Day Movie Night at the ASEC Hall. Bring the dads, bring a blanket and come on down for the much anticipated screening of ‘The Bad Guys’ from 6:45pm. Hotdogs and Popcorn will be available for purchase from 6:30pm.
Colour Fun Run:
Friday is our Colour Fun Run at the Town Oval. Students will be walking to the Town Oval at 10am, where they will run the track and get blasted with coloured powder! Students are doing an amazing job collecting funds for sponsorship, with the collective funds already exceeding $4K! Students will return to school after the Colour Run for an afternoon of water play and slip’n’slides on the school oval. Students are required to wear a white t-shirt for the event and bring a spare set of clothes to change into after the event.
Arts and Culture Festival
The Annual Arts and Culture Festival has been planned to occur on Thursday 22 September (Week 10). The day will consist of 10 planned rotations for our students to engage in activities from all over the world. The day will be followed by an afternoon of cuisines and performances from each class’s chose. More details to follow, pencil it in your diaries, it is sure to be another great school community event.
Stop Work Action:
The Commissioner for Public Employment and the Australian Education Union NT are in current negotiations on a new NTPS Non-Contract Principals, Teachers and Assistant Teachers’ Enterprise Agreement. As such, the Australian Education Union has advised Protected Industrial Action has been scheduled for a full day on Thursday 1 September 2022. Alyangula Area School will be affected by the industrial action but will remain open.
It is anticipated that a significant number of our teachers will strike as part of their current EBA negotiations. To ensure appropriate supervision is in place for students we will be adopting a Safe Supervision Model for Thursday 1st September. We are still in the early stages of planning what this might look like on Thursday, but I can confirm that it will include collapsing and combining classes as well as utilising outdoor play and increased break times.
If your child/ren will not be attending school on Thursday 1st September we kindly ask that you advise our Admin Office via phone or through our website as soon as practical. Student attendance information will greatly assist us when planning for our supervision model on Thursday.
We thank the school community for your understanding, and we absolutely appreciate this action is part of an EBA negotiation process.
BEAT in Darwin:
Finally, I would like to wish our Senior Choir all the very best as they prepare to travel to Darwin to perform at the 2022 BEAT Festival. Their passion and dedication shone through at their latest performance during assembly, and I just know they will do our school, their families and themselves proud! A huge shout out to Ms Peta Bartley who has made this whole thing happen! Goodluck Senior Choir.
